SKA is dedicated to revealing the mysteries of the universe, such as the dawn of the universe and the cradle of life, and answering the basic problems of the universe, such as the first light of the universe, the formation of structures, and the origin of life. It is expected to open up a new era for human understanding of the universe.

In 2011, seven countries including China established the SKA Independent Legal Institution (SKAO) as a founding member. SKAO currently has 10 member states in Australia, Canada, China, India, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK, and is headquartered in the UK. The SKA project is divided into the construction preparation phase, the construction phase and the operation phase (estimated 50 years). It is expected that the procurement tender will be started in 2019 and the construction will start in 2020.

It is understood that the design and construction of SKA-P is under the leadership of China Electronics 54. The concept design was proposed in May 2015. At the international selection meeting of antenna design schemes held in November of the same year, the international jury composed of several experts was comprehensively considered based on factors such as design maturity, construction and installation plan, and cost. The Chinese design proposal is recommended as the sole development plan for SKA-P.

In 2017, the Joint Radio Astronomy Technology Laboratory (JLRAT), jointly established by China Electronics 54 and the National Astronomical Observatory, became the new lead unit of the SKA Antenna Work Package Alliance, and was jointly carried out by 20 research institutes in South Africa, Germany, Italy and other countries. SKA reflector antenna research and development, and undertaken the research and development of SKA-P.

According to Zhang Guihua, director of the 54th China Electronics Division, the performance of the reflector antenna is related to the overall performance of SKA and the realization of the main scientific goals. SKA puts very high requirements on antenna technical indicators and engineering construction. On the one hand, it needs to meet the requirements of high sensitivity, high pointing accuracy, high pointing consistency, ultra-wideband, high electromagnetic shielding and large field of view. Through five years of technical research, JLRAT led the international team through standardization, modularization, refinement and integrated design, so that SKA-P finally technically meets all technical indicators of SKA.

The design life of the antenna is 50 years, which is 2/3 of the weight of the conventional antenna. It has the advantages of low power consumption, low cost, easy installation, easy transportation and mass production, which lays a strong foundation for the smooth implementation of the future SKA project. .
